♚ Life’s Petty King$ ♛

Immanuel R. Knight

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty ruled before all
A dollar sign here, a dollar sign there
Lives lived by a dead-president’s stare

Whilst we tweeted and twittered each day
Our lives so fleeted and flittered away
As eyes lay glued to screen-bright attractions
Hearts sank deep through dead-moral distractions

Paper and plastic, plastic and paper
These things the kings, the treasures we savor
Humpty Dumpties in everyone’s pockets
Sucking our souls straight out of their sockets

Gold and silver, silver and gold
“Such pretty rings!” Our hearts we’ve sold
Life’s petty kings, or so we’re told
From pink and young until grey and old

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
But we were the ones who took a great fall
Whilst he sat and laughed on high
The kings our wallets, our hearts sucked dry
